April, 2023. TED conference in Vancouver, Canada

Tierney led a sold-out natural dye workshop at the main TED conference in Vancouver, Canada where she gave a presentation on the influence fabric dyes have had on human history with special mention of cochineal (including lovely photos from Carroll and Thomas’s Oaxaca expedition), indigo and violacein. Brooke Jude extracted violacein dye from the Hudson River Valley for this workshop and each participant was able to dye a custom-made TED embroidered Malagasy silk bookmark created by Ta’na’na from Madagascar. Lesli helped assemble a beautiful poster of the origins and medicinal benefits of natural dyes and helped curate a small but mighty exhibit of some of our finest dyed pieces including our purple snail-dyed fabric f(Don Habacuc Avedan from Pinotepa de Don Luis, Oaxaca, Mexico). Tierney also met with and interviewed creator of Phool, Anit Agarwal, and acquired samples of his vegan leather and incense made from flower waste.

What will we wear in a post-petroleum future?
Should we just go naked?
