FABRIC: CAMEL WOOL AND SILK

Region: Ashgabat, Turkmenistan

Fabric Name:
Woven camel and silk

Origin:
Camelus dromedarius and Bombyx mori

Who made our fabric:
Unique Camel Wool, led by Shasenem Garlyyeva, Ashgabat, Turkmenistan

Natural history and ecology:
Dromedary camels have been a part of Turkmen culture, economy, and daily life for millenia. Turkmens have benefitted from the medicinal properties of this wool from one generation to another. They have found that “the dry heat of camel hair improves blood circulation, promotes vasodilation, activates metabolism and regenerative processes in tissues.” (*Unique Camel Wool)

What makes this so special:

Unique Camel Wool uses two indigenous raw materials in this weaving, wool and silk, that have been a part of their cultural history for centuries. In their 100% camel weavings, they use no additional dye, making the entire weaving biodegradable. Younger camels are lighter in color while older camels provide deeper browns. The camel wool has thermal properties and can be used both indoors and outdoors since the large amount of lanolin allows it to be waterproof.

Camels and their fabric… the ‘wealth and pride’ of Turkmenistan.

Shasenem Garlyyeva and her daughter Jennet, continue to find beautiful ways to transform locally sourced camel wool and other indigenous materials into beautiful fabrics for the home.
