Bhutan: Royal Highlander Festival & Highland Textile Journey

Trip Information

19 - 27 October, 2026

Have you ever imagined journeying beyond Bhutan’s valleys into its remote highlands, where culture is not performed, but lived? This journey is both expedition and immersion, culminating in the extraordinary Royal Highlander Festival in the high Himalayan village of Laya.

Timed with this rare gathering, we encounter Bhutan’s highland communities, the Layap people, whose lives are shaped by altitude, climate, and a deep connection to the land. Surrounded by yak caravans and vast mountain landscapes, we witness a way of life that remains resilient and profoundly rooted in place.

Textiles are our thread throughout the journey. From the refined weaving traditions of Thimphu to the raw, tactile world of yak wool and felt in the highlands, we explore how cloth becomes culture, reflecting ecology, identity, and centuries of knowledge. Across valleys, forests, and alpine zones, we experience distinct textile traditions shaped by the land itself.

The journey is designed to balance adventure and comfort, with days of exploration and meaningful encounters, and evenings for rest and reflection.

Itinerary

  • Flying into Bhutan is one of the great Himalayan experiences, with snowy peaks rising dramatically as the plane descends into the Paro valley. Upon arrival, we settle gently into the rhythm of Bhutan, with time to rest, wander the valley, or simply absorb the serenity of the mountains after the journey. In the evening, we gather for a welcome dinner and introduction to the days ahead. Overnight in Paro. Paro Rema resort.  Meals Included: D

  • We drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital, where tradition and modern life exist in quiet harmony. Along the way, prayer flags flutter across mountain ridges, and rivers wind through pine forests. In the evening, we visit the majestic Tashichho Dzong, a fortress-monastery that anchors the country's spiritual and administrative life. A gentle walk through the city helps us acclimate to the altitude and pace of Bhutanese life. Overnight in Thimphu. Thimphu River View Resort. Meals Included: B,L,D

  • This day is dedicated to Bhutan’s extraordinary textile heritage. We visit the National Textile Museum, where intricate patterns and regional techniques reveal stories of identity, ecology, and culture. A hands-on weaving session introduces us to traditional looms, followed by a natural dye workshop exploring the deep reds of madder, earthy walnut browns, and luminous indigo blues.

Crossing the breathtaking Dochula Pass, we descend into the lush Punakha valley before continuing toward Gasa, gateway to the Himalayan yak-herding regions. Overnight in Punaka. Punakha Meripuensum Resort. Meals Included: B,L,D

  • Today we leave Bhutan’s lush river valleys behind and journey deep into the remote highlands. Driving north toward Gasa, the landscape gradually transforms- subtropical forests giving way to rugged mountain terrain, waterfalls, and dramatic Himalayan vistas. From Gasa, we continue by local pickup truck along winding mountain tracks before beginning a 2–3 hour hike into Laya, a secluded highland village accessible only by foot or horseback. Home to the Layap people, Laya sits beneath vast mountain skies at nearly 4,000 meters, where yak herding and highland traditions continue to shape everyday life. Arriving here feels less like entering a destination and more like stepping into another rhythm of existence—remote, resilient, and deeply connected to the land. Overnight in Laya. Laya Homestay. Meals Included: B,L,D

  • Today, we experience the extraordinary Royal Highlander Festival, one of the most remote cultural gatherings in the world. Against a backdrop of vast Himalayan peaks, highland communities gather to celebrate traditions shaped by life at altitude. Events include yak races, highland archery, traditional music and dance, and vibrant displays of nomadic craftsmanship. The festival offers a rare opportunity to witness yak wool, felt-making, and highland textile traditions that remain deeply connected to the rhythms of mountain life. Overnight in Laya. Laya Homestay. Meals Included: B,L,D

  • We descend from the highlands, retracing our journey through rugged mountain terrain and forested valleys back toward Punakha. The dramatic transition from alpine landscapes to subtropical greenery reveals Bhutan’s extraordinary ecological diversity. The evening is at leisure to rest and reflect after our days in the Himalaya. Overnight in Punaka. Punakha Meripuensum Resort. Meals Included: B,L,D

  • After breakfast, we return westward through winding mountain roads and river valleys toward Paro. Depending on timing, there may be opportunities for village walks, monastery visits, or quiet moments to absorb the landscapes one final time. The evening is relaxed, with time to enjoy Paro at an unhurried pace. Overnight in Paro. Paro Rema Resort. Meals Included: B,L,D

  • Our final full day is devoted to Bhutan’s most iconic sacred site. Clinging dramatically to a cliffside high above the valley, Tiger’s Nest Monastery is believed to be where Guru Padmasambhava meditated after arriving on the back of a flying tigress. The hike is both physical and contemplative, offering spectacular views and moments of reflection. In the evening, we gather for a farewell dinner celebrating the journey we have shared through Bhutan’s valleys, highlands, and living traditions. Overnight in Paro. Paro Rema Resort. Meals Included: B,L,D

  • Transfer to the airport for departure from Paro, carrying with you memories of Bhutan’s landscapes, sacred traditions, and the remarkable cultures of its high Himalayan communities.
